Digital Humanities Librarian

We are seeking a Digital Humanities Librarian who will work with faculty and students in the humanities, as well as librarians and software engineers in the Sheridan Libraries and Museums, to foster, shape and support digital approaches to humanistic research, teaching, and learning. This work includes the successful design and implementation of digital scholarship throughout its entire life cycle, including project design and funding, development, promotion, and preservation. The librarian must have a demonstrable interest in working across the humanities fields and the newer field of Digital Curation to develop digital scholarship and teaching that are cutting-edge, sustainable, and ethical in both disciplinary clusters. The librarian must have a professional background in the theories, methods, and materials of humanities research and teaching, especially as developed at JHU, such as Deconstruction, history of the book, and Black Feminist History. In addition to incubating new digital resources, the librarian will be involved in curating multiple existing digital humanities projects such as, currently, Black Beyond Data, the Black Press Research Collective, the Archaeology of Reading, Keywords for Black Louisiana, and Digital Library of Medieval Manuscripts.

The librarian engages deeply with Sheridan Libraries colleagues, particularly those in Academic Liaison, Special Collections, University Archives, Digital Collections, GIS and Data Services, and the Digital Research and Curation Center; with scholars around campus; with the Center for Digital Humanities; and with other campus entities. Throughout these collaborations, the librarian identifies innovative and sustainable digital methods, tools, and resources that advance scholarly investigation and that cross-fertilize initiatives in the Libraries (e.g., Open Access, digital collections development) with work primarily in the schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering.

The librarian will have a strong academic background in the humanities and a passion for using technical tools and resources to encourage sharing and engagement in humanities research and teaching.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• Conduct environmental scans of relevant academic departments in conjunction with subject librarians, development staff, and special collections curators in order to identify current and emerging scholarly projects for which digital tools and methodologies are appropriate, as well as funding to support those projects sustainably.
• Coordinate information about digital arts and humanities scholarship on campus in order to facilitate interdisciplinarity collaboration and build sustainable coalitions in DH across disciplines.
• Identify and evaluate current and emerging digital tools, methodologies, and best practices and standards supporting digital humanities and lead efforts to introduce these digital pedagogies into both academic and extracurricular learning environments.
• Provide expert consulting service to humanities scholars and students on techniques and tools that serve to advance their teaching, learning and research.
• Serve as a liaison between library IT and humanities scholars and students to align digital humanities projects with preferred technology solutions.
• Serve as a strategist and resource person for the libraries and library IT on trends in the digital humanities, both at the campus and national level, and communicate these trends regularly to colleagues.
• Serve as product owner on engineering teams within the library that are working to provide support to digital humanities projects.
• Develop training and workshops to share methods, tools, and resources for the management of digital humanities materials.
• Collaborate with staff managing the libraries’ digital repositories to advance the libraries’ contributions to faculty and student research projects.
• Collaborate with the Libraries’ IT staff to express needs and define solutions for the technical needs of digital humanities projects.

Special Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

• Demonstrated experience with digital humanities research tools and approaches (e.g., text mining, data visualization, image analysis, network analysis, natural language processing and artificial intelligence more broadly, and augmented reality).
• Knowledge of data issues in the research/knowledge creation lifecycle.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, subject librarians, curators, IT specialists and others to advance digital humanities research.
• Experience representing the library to external stakeholders and engaging in consortial projects.
• Experience in developing a multifaceted program for a multidisciplinary constituency.
• Advanced cultural competency that demonstrates an interest in participating in and leading discussions, initiatives, and collection development activities that reflect diversity and inclusion issues relevant to students, faculty, staff, and the community.
• Familiarity with research methodologies across the humanities.
• Experience developing requirements for the selection or creation of software systems.
• Knowledge of at least one programming language.

• MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or an advanced related Degree.
• Three years professional library experience.

• A second degree in a relevant humanities discipline.
• Experience with grant writing.
• Experience with teaching digital scholarship tools, particularly workshops.
• Familiarity with the software development process, including project management.
