The Collection Development Librarian works to develop and maintain the Law Library’s collection of U.S. materials, ensuring that the Law Library’s resources support current and future educational and research activities of the students, faculty, and other patrons affiliated with the Law Center. In consultation with the Director of the Law Library and Associate Director for Resource Management & Technology, the incumbent designs, implements, and evaluates projects to enhance the Law Library’s collection of U.S. legal and non-legal materials and plays a lead role in informing broad, strategic collection policies. Reporting to the Associate Director for Resource Management & Technology, additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Collection Development

  • Review and recommend materials within designated subject areas to be added to the collection for materials in all formats, researching and advising on database purchase recommendations and establishing database trials.

  • Recommend and coordinate retention, de-selection, and withdrawal of materials from the collection, maintaining library approval profiles and regularly reviewing approval books for selection or return.

  • Serve as the initial contact for gifts and donations and review donations for acceptance and dispersal, corresponding with donors when needed.

  • Design, implement, and evaluate projects to enhance the Law Library’s collection of U.S. legal and nonlegal materials.

  • Advise and participate in ongoing development of collection policies, monitoring and ensuring the efficient expenditure of the Law Library's materials budgets.

  • Make budgetary recommendations and advise on fiscal allocations, coordinating the activities of the Law Library’s designated subject specialists and guiding them in the application of collection development tools, policies, and principles.

  • Serve as a principal resource for librarians, faculty, staff, and vendors on collection development issues, reviewing resource recommendations from librarian selectors, law faculty, or external constituents for selection and retention.

  • Write and maintain procedures for all functional aspects of the department, coordinating and making suggestions for improvements to collection development workflows.

Collection Management

  • Serve as co-chair of the Collection Development Committee, overseeing setting meetings, organizing agendas, and leading collection-related projects.

  • Serve as the Law Library’s liaison to other Georgetown libraries on collaborative collection initiatives, purchasing, and access to shared resources.

  • Monitor collection use and growth, plan, and execute projects, managing the physical aspects of the Law Library’s print collection including shifting, layout, and space allocation.

  • Perform regular collection inventories and collaborate with library departments to resolve space or shelving issues.

  • Document decisions and changes to collection strategy, policy, or arrangement and keep detailed notes of projects, outcomes, and statistics.

Collection Analysis & Reference

  • Lead and manage collection assessment and development by analyzing institutional data, usage statistics, interlibrary loan data, and other metrics.

  • Regularly evaluate collection assessment metrics and make recommendations for improvement.

  • Analyze and adjust collection purchasing patterns using collection analysis tools.

  • Provide data for reports and analyze related to collections development and maintenance, training librarians and library staff in use of selection tools and assessment methods.

  • Provide reference and research assistance through scheduled reference desk rotations, which may be on evenings and weekends, as well as during normal business hours.

Professional Activities and Institutional Advancement

  • Participate in library committees, forums, search committees, and task forces.

  • Perform work for other departments or sections as part of library-wide efforts in cross-training and personal development, attending occasional mandatory events as a representative of the library.

  • Participate in professional organizations such as the American Association of Law Libraries, American Library Association, and the Law Librarians Society of the District of Columbia (LLSDC).

  • Maintain current awareness of new technologies and library trends by following news sources and participating in workshops and classes.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Masters in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent

  • Thorough knowledge of legal materials, legal publishers, and trends in law library collections

  • At least three years of library experience

  • Juris Doctor from ABA-accredited institution or equivalent preferred

  • Familiarity with the ExLibris Alma library services platform preferred

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$54,616.00 - $100,493.33

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
