Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Chemical Library Manager at UL Research Institutes' Chemical Insights Research Institute, based in our Research Triangle Park area facilities. The The Chemical Library Manager is responsible for the operational management of the chemical library used to support Underwriters Laboratories Research Institutes’ (ULRI) Chemical Insights mission to provide unbiased research on chemicals and their risks to people’s health. The chemical library to be developed will consist of thousands of environmental, industrial, and consumer chemicals that are used across a variety of research activities, including high-throughput in vitro screening and development of analytical chemistry methods. The Chemical Library Manager reports to the Center for Chemical Informatics and Screening Research Director and will work closely with other leaders, researchers, and colleagues across the research organization to advance operational excellence.

What you’ll learn and achieve:

As the Chemical Library Manager, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Develop and execute strategies for chemical library growth, management, and lifecycle governance aligned with research priorities.

  • Evaluate chemical library composition and collaborate with research teams to recommend and prioritize chemical acquisitions.

  • Establish and apply governance policies for chemical registration, quality control, storage, barcoding, and retirement of chemical stocks.

  • Maintain accurate and complete records for chemical vendors, lot numbers, purity, storage conditions, and sample lineage within compound management systems.

  • Collaborate with cheminformatics and data teams to ensure proper annotation, duplicate checking, metadata quality, and system integrity.

  • Manage chemical library storage systems and supervise inventory to ensure sample integrity and availability.

  • Coordinate procurement activities and manage relationships with internal stakeholders and external chemical vendors.

  • Perform solubilization, aliquoting, plating, distribution, and automated sample handling to support internal research and external collaborations.

  • Support high-throughput screening efforts, including plate creation, cherry-picking, hit confirmation, and compound quality control.

  • Ensure compliance with internal quality standards, chemical safety regulations, documentation requirements, and contribute to technical reports and publications.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Expert knowledge of chemistry, laboratory automation, and management of large chemical libraries.

  • Strong understanding of analytical chemistry techniques used to verify purity and concentrations of chemical library samples.

  • Proficiency with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and/or gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), and mass spectrometry (MS).

  • Familiarity with high-throughput screening workflows and requirements.

  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated ability to work independently.

  • Ability to clearly communicate complex chemistry concepts to diverse technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

 Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences, or another related field, and

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience managing small-molecule compound libraries.

  • Hands on experience with automated liquid handling, acoustic dispensing, and chemical informatic systems.

  • Laboratory experience with NMR spectroscopy, LC-MS, and/or GC-MS preferred.
