DescriptionProvides original and complex copy cataloging and metadata services for library materials to ensure discoverability and robust access to the items in the library's collections. Directs necessary database maintenance, resolves difficult cataloging problems, provides statistics, and performs related catalog-management activities to help ensure the library's records and those supplied by other vendors meet local and national standards. Provides training and guidance to library staff members who work in the online catalog.
This is a full time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $63,009-$78,787 per year.
Core Responsibilities:
- Performs original and complex copy-cataloging of all formats of library materials according to national and local standards in English and non-English languages, working in both the library catalog and national databases
- Develops cataloging policies and addresses cataloging priorities
- Resolves complex problems, including headings conflicts and other discrepancies, associated with bibliographic, authority, item, and holding records
- Reviews and enhances vendor-supplied MARC records for batch-loading into the library catalog
- Supervises Senior Catalog Associate
- Provides statistics to library leadership and outside professional organizations as requested
- Staffs the Research Desk and teaches Research and Information literacy skills in the classroom and in one-on-one meetings as needed, modeling best practices from instructional design and the science of learning.
- Develops appropriate web guides and other learning and outreach materials that highlight library resources and exhibit universal design principles for accessibility

Requirements - Graduate degree in library or information science from an accredited institution, or its equivalent, required
- Minimum of 3 years previous library experience, required - including experience with cataloging/metadata procedures, library catalogs, and library systems - including minimum 1 year previous experience with ExLibris’ Alma/Primo library services platform
- Familiarity with national library cataloging/metadata standards, e.g MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data and Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings, etc.
- Complex problem-solving and research skills involving the analysis and interpretation of information; strong analytical and organizational skills, attention to detail, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently, required
- Ability to work independently; strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills; attention to detail
- Working knowledge of one or more languages taught at Middlebury, required
