The Marvin A. Pomerantz Business Library, a branch library of the University of Iowa Libraries, seeks a collaborative and customer service-oriented individual to join our team as a Business Librarian for teaching, learning, and research. Reporting to the Director of the Marvin A. Pomerantz Business Library, the Business Librarian will serve as a liaison to the Tippie College of Business, planning, promoting, and providing business information services to students, faculty, and staff. In this public-facing role, the Business Librarian will actively engage with the community, fostering strong relationships with faculty, staff, and students to enhance the visibility and positive perception of library services within the Tippie College of Business and campus community. They will collaborate with the business library team to deliver services to meet our community's information needs and promote library services through course-integrated instruction, reference services, events, and programs. 

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the business library team to deliver library services and resources that support the academic programs, departments, and centers of the Tippie College of Business.
  • Serve as an active subject liaison for business and economics, inclusive of instruction, research consultation, and outreach.
  • Provide business reference services to the Tippie College of Business and the UI community, including scheduled and unscheduled consultations, email, chat and phone
  • Provide user-focused instruction through both face-to-face and online formats. Collaborate directly with instructors to integrate business information sources and research skills into academic settings, ensuring alignment with course objectives.
  • Enhance awareness of research databases and library services by creating engaging content, including signage, online research guides, and tutorials.
  • Partner with units in the Libraries, Tippie College of Business, campus constituents, and relevant groups to assist in and/or develop outreach initiatives, including events, programs, and training workshops.
  • Proactively collaborate with Libraries and Tippie College of Business units to raise awareness and promote the use of library services through various communication channels and events including social media, campus advertising screens, newsletters/blogs, student organizations and resource fairs.
  • Participate as a member of a team that plans, develops, and evaluates services and collections supporting instruction and research.
  • Support day-to-day operations in the business library, including staffing the information desk and library.
  • Maintain effective and productive relationships with Tippie College of Business faculty and staff, campus units, professional colleagues, vendors, and other appropriate partners.
  • Acquire and maintain expertise in business information trends.
  • Participate in and contribute to relevant library and University-wide activities and committees. Contribute to the profession through service, research, publishing, and/or teaching.

Required Education:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library/information science,

Required Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of two years of professional experience working in an academic or research library or equivalent
  • Experience providing reference/research, instruction, and outreach services
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting and independently where consultation, flexibility, collaboration and cooperation are essential
  • Knowledge of trends and practices in instruction, reference services and information access
  • Demonstrated willingness to take on new challenges and opportunities with initiative and creativity.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with strong written and oral communication abilities, a commitment to customer service, and a proven ability to build and maintain productive relationships with colleagues and library users/groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a welcoming and respectful environment in a job-related experience, an academic setting, and/or the community.
  • Demonstrated interest in professional development that will enhance the candidate’s value to the Libraries, the University, and the profession

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience providing reference, research, instruction, and outreach services in an academic business library or business-related information center
  • Demonstrated skill in using business information resources and knowledge of emerging trends in business librarianship. 
  • Ability to efficiently manage multiple projects and priorities in a busy environment.
  • Experience using online learning tools, such as LibGuides, tutorial creation programs, and course management software.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the mission of a research university and the mission and functions of a large research library.

The hiring salary range for this Specialist Librarian position is $55,000 - $74,000.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and credential/education verification. Up to 5 professional references will be requested at a later step in the recruitment process. 

This position is eligible for on-campus and/or hybrid remote work within Iowa, with the majority of work time being on campus, and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
