The Assistant Library Technician II position is an important part of the Juneau Public Libraries. This person can expect to work with the public and library staff both in the library facilities and within the Juneau community.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

The Juneau Public Libraries have three locations: the Downtown Juneau Public Library (located atop the Marine Parking Garage on the waterfront), the Mendenhall Valley Public Library (located in Dimond Park), and the Douglas Public Library (located in the Douglas Community Building, a shared facility with the Fire Department).

Library staff offices are located at the Downtown Library. The libraries are open 7 days a week, excluding CBJ holidays.

This position works Monday-Friday with weekly evening and occasional weekend shifts and occasional evening and weekend programs.



Typical Responsibilities

This position provides specialized technical library support and covers both circulation and reference responsibilities on the Library’s public service desks. This position frequently uses library databases and electronic catalog, and assists patrons in the use of library services, materials, and facilities. This position works as part of a team of three to collaborate with community groups to develop and implement educational and outreach programs for youth and adults with an emphasis on underserved populations. 

Typical responsibilities include the following:

  • Works regular shifts and occasional relief shifts on public service desks.
  • Under the direction of the Outreach Librarian, works to implement a wide range of diverse community events with an emphasis on programs  for community members who face barriers to traditional library use.
  • Seeks opportunities to collaborate with community organizations and seeks to identify service gaps.
  • Helps maintain ongoing programs and services within the library. 
  • Works with the Outreach/Adult Programming team to provide programs and services to adults at the Library.
  • Works with the Youth Services team to provide programs and services to underserved youth.
  • Assists seniors and the general public on utilizing library e-resources and technology.
  • Uses a wide variety of standard office machines, electronic devices and audio visual equipment.
  • Employs considerable independent judgement to correct inappropriate patron conduct.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:        

Graduation from high school or the equivalent.

 


Experience:       

One (1) year of customer service experience that included the use of computer systems or databases. 

 

SUBSTITUTION:  

Six (6) months of experience as an Assistant Library Technician I at the CBJ or equivalent elsewhere. 

 

OR

 

Post-secondary education in any academic discipline from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 2.67 semester hours (4 quarter hours) for one month of experience.  

 

NOTE: For some positions, experience working with pre-school age children in a structured environment or with specific populations is highly desired but not required.

 


License: 

A valid Driver's License at the time of appointment and for continued employment


Other:  

Employee must have access to reliable transportation to transport self and library materials to Library branches and locations where community programs are held.
