This recruitment is to fill one vacancy assigned to the Guadalupe Branch Library. 


POSITION SUMMARY

Under general direction of assigned supervisor, the Assistant Library Technician performs primarily service-oriented tasks in the Adult, Youth, Circulation, or BranchServices divisions. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this classification but may act as lead worker for temporarily assigned employees, or special projects.

The Assistant Library Technician position is an Individual Contributor role that provides individualized customer service, programming, access to resources and information. Their role enables the community to explore and use free and accessible resources to build knowledge for a better life.

IMPORTANT: This limited-service position offers up to 19 hours per week. This position is not eligible for benefits and may be required to work evening, weekend, and on-call assignments.

DUTIES

These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the business needs of the department and organization.  This position:
  • Assists the public with selecting and locating collection items and with information needs including obtaining a library card, circulating materials, accessing e-materials, using the catalog, and providing basic instruction on how to use library resources such as computers, microfilm, and copier.
  • Assists children with studying and completing homework assignments, oversees daily homework activities in the Homework Center.
  • Responds to telephone inquiries, handles requests for study room use, keeps and reports use statistics, and conducts library tours and programming.
  • Shelves materials and maintains in-house databases and files, such as digital newspapers.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the department director.
  • Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ideally, previous experience working in a library; and
  • Currently enrolled college/university student or have graduated from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree or higher.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Desired:
    • Experience using online library catalogs and electronic resources. 
    • For Youth Services position, working with children in an instructional environment.
    • Bilingual Spanish/English.
  • Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession, such as: 
    • Public library role and municipal operations; library cataloging systems.
    • Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent). 
    • Use computer and other office equipment effectively. 
  • Desired licenses and/or certifications associated with the assignment.
  • Possession of a valid and appropriate Driver License. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and meet City liability requirements to drive for City business. 
  • Requires completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.
  • The incumbent must meet the physical requirements of the job class and have mobility, balance, coordination, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
  • May require completion of a pre-employment physical to the satisfaction of the City.
