MORGAN COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Assistant Librarian Employment: Part-time 20 HOURS PER WEEK

Department: Library FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Supervisor: Library Director Employer: Morgan County

Under direction of the Library Director, and close supervision of the Assistant Library Director, assists in the overall operations of the library which includes preparing library materials for circulation, planning and presenting weekly story hours, and assisting at the circulation desk. Provides close to general supervision to Library Pages or volunteers, as assigned.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:


  • Works at the circulation desk, checking items in and out, greets patrons and assists with requests; submits Interlibrary Loan requests to the state library.

  • Sorts and shelves library materials, helps to straighten and maintain shelves in call number order; segregates books and other materials needing repairs; assists patrons to locate books and materials.

  • Responsible for cataloging library items and new book preparation.

  • Reads book reviews; recommends books and library materials for purchase.

  • Operates computer to enter collection materials and patron data; assisting patrons on OPAC and public access computers and the use of the library.

  • Assists library patrons by responding to reference questions, locates information sources; provides readers advisory regarding specific books and authors; directs patrons to the appropriate section.

  • Participates in staff meetings and in library program development; prepares for and presents weekly story hour.

  • Assists during other library programming (Summer Reading Program, Lego Club, Family Fun Night, etc.); assists in conducting library tours for scouts and other groups.

  • Oversees library when Directors are not present.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS:


  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred; AND

  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience performing above or related duties; OR

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Working knowledge of library reference, circulation and cataloging methods, library practices and procedures, and Dewey Decimal System. Knowledge of children's, young adult and adult literature helpful.

  • Must have abilities in working with the public; good interpersonal communication skills, knowledge of computer, internet and research skills.

  • Work quickly and accurately; operate various office machines and equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with everyone within the library.

  • Ability to make a decision or solve a problem by using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, and propose quality solutions.

  • Read, interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and/or procedures; abide by laws governing access to public and private records (Government Records Access and Management Act).

  • Ability to take initiative in addressing problems in day-to-day operations.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive records and information.

  • Ability to promote a positive attitude and motivate peers to work as a team.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Must be able to work evenings and Saturdays

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands of this position and work environment characteristics described are representative of those that must be met or will be encountered by an employee while successfully performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger, leg and foot dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and some creative problem solving. Occasionally lifts, carries, pushes, pulls, or otherwise moves objects weighing up to 30 pounds.


The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. Work is performed in an office or other environmentally controlled room.
