Position Description


Under general supervision, the Assistant Law Librarian I is primarily responsible for providing reference services to patrons, presenting engaging programs, facilitating training sessions, and contributing content for the Law Library's online presence. Individuals in this role will have strong research, reference, and communication skills, and must have knowledge of legal resources.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reference Services: Provides reference services to patrons at least two (2) hours a day from the Law Library's virtual and physical reference desks, including assisting with incoming telephone and email inquiries when needed.
  • Marketing and Outreach: Participates in marketing and outreach efforts by creating digital and print marketing materials, leading tours, and presenting programs to stakeholders, community partners, and the public. As well as contributing content for the Law Library's online presence, including webpages, blog and social media posts, and event announcements.
  • Law Library Resources and Training: Presents programs, creates research guides and other helpful guidelines for patrons and Law Library staff, and conducts training sessions on Law Library resources and services, including research databases, legal technology, and services for attorneys and other legal professionals.
  • Law Library Facility Maintenance: Prepares the Law Library facilities for use by patrons and at closing by re-shelving print materials, straightening chairs and tables, and generally maintaining the neat appearance of the Law Library throughout the day.
  • Resource Maintenance: Maintains Law Library resources by filing updates or pocket parts in print library materials.
  • Library Services and Assistance: Performs various administrative tasks that include assisting patrons with copying, scanning, faxing, and other office-related tasks in the Law Library's copy center as needed, registering new cards, helping patrons to check in, check-outs, and holds, and processing public library materials as needed.

Requirements

Supporting Job Application Documents:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a directly related field from an accredited college or university and 
  • Two (2) years of directly related experience including customer service and professional library experience.
OR
  • Associate's Degree in a directly related field from an accredited college or university and 
  • Four (4) years of directly related experience including customer service and professional library experience.
OR
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution and
  • Six (6) years of directly related experience including customer service and professional library experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Excellent legal research and reference skills, with demonstrated expertise in both print and electronic resources. 
  • Strong customer service and people skills when interacting with both patrons and staff.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required.

General Information

Located in downtown Houston, the Harris County Attorney’s Office represents Harris County government, the Harris County Flood Control District, the Harris County Toll Road Authority, and the Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network in all civil matters, including lawsuits. The office also provides legal advice to county officials and employees.


Position Type and Typical Work Schedule: 

  • This is a full-time position with the typical work hours of Monday - Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. 

  • Occasional weekends, holidays, and overtime may be required based on the specific needs and demands of the Harris County Attorney's Office and the Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library.


Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • This role involves operating within an office and outdoor setting, implying that a significant portion of the tasks and responsibilities will take place outside of traditional indoor office spaces. The physical demands may involve lifting and moving objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

  • The selected candidate may be eligible to participate in the HCAO telework program.

Compensation: 

  • The base compensation for this position will be determined on the candidate’s qualifications and the pay of other employees in the job function. Total compensation includes attractive paid leave programs, health benefits, and retirement plans.

  • In addition, the position is eligible for the accrual of compensatory time off for hours worked over 40 in a workweek, consistent with Harris County personnel policies and procedures.
