A. POSITION PURPOSE

The Applied Sciences Librarian provides specialized research consultation, instruction, and collection development for all undergraduate and graduate programs in the School of Engineering, and the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics. In addition to these subject and functional emphases, the Applied Sciences Librarian participates in and supports first year writing classes, general research services, and library outreach initiatives. This position reports to the Head of Research, Outreach, and Inclusion.

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching, Research Consultation, Outreach and Assessment (70%)

  • Serves as liaison to all academic departments in the School of Engineering, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, and the Department of Physics
  • Collaborates with faculty to design and deliver library instruction that best meets the learning objectives of courses in these academic programs.
  • Creates instructional support tools, such as online research guides, tutorials, and other digital learning objects.
  • Collaborates with other subject librarians and library leaders to assess instructional programs and services.
  • Collaborates with faculty to design and deliver library instruction that best meets the learning objectives of Critical Thinking and Writing courses for first-year students.
  • Engages with departmental faculty and students (undergraduate and graduate) to support scholarship and research and provide in-depth specialized reference assistance.
  • In collaboration with the Business and Data Services Librarian, support library-wide data initiatives, including data literacy instruction.
  • Provides in-person and virtual research assistance and consultations to students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Supports and participates in outreach activities and events organized by Research, Outreach & Inclusion, and the University Library as a whole.

Collection Management and Assessment (20%)

  • Manages and develops all electronic and print collections for the subject areas of the position.
  • Identifies new titles and/or creates order profiles to facilitate the addition of materials to the collection.
  • Collects, records, and makes data-driven decisions related to holdings and use of collections within given subject areas.
  • Collaborates with other subject librarians and library leaders to assess the usefulness and quality of library collections.

Service and Scholarship (10%)

  • Serves on and/or chairs University and University Library committees, working groups, and task forces.
  • Participates in local, state, regional, and national/international professional and scholarly societies and organizations.
  • Conducts research related to library science and/or another appropriate academic discipline; presents results at conferences and/or through publication.

C. GENERAL GUIDELINES

  • Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality of services.
  • Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
  • Maintains contact with customers, stakeholders and patrons and solicits feedback for improved services.
  • Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools, planned training, and performance initiatives.
  • Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflows.
  • Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of all operational functions.
  • Prepares and submits reports as requested and required.
  • Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

Receives Work Direction

  • Reports to and is supervised by the Head of Research, Outreach & Inclusion
  • May receive work orientation, guidance, or training from University Library colleagues within and external to the Research, Outreach & Inclusion department.

Work Schedule

  • This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position. Working days are Monday through Friday.  Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support department and unit services, programs, and events.

D. QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited (or equivalent) library science or information science program
  • At least two years experience providing research and instructional services in a library.
  • Ability to develop and deliver dynamic instruction on discovering, evaluating, and using information resources.
  • Demonstrated competency in both in person and online reference work.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written, collaboration, and presentation skills for communicating with a wide range of constituencies.

Preferred

  • Interest, knowledge, or experience  in an engineering or applied science discipline
  • Interest, knowledge, or experience  in emerging issues and technologies in science librarianship
  • Active involvement in professional development activities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of the research interview
  • Knowledge of emerging instructional practices and their application
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues in scholarly communication
  • Knowledge of emerging issues and technologies in academic librarianship
  • Knowledge of best practices and goals of collection development
  • Knowledge of the assessment cycle and its use in continuous program improvement

Skills

Appointment Level:

This position is included in the Academic Staff Librarian category. The specific level at which an appointment is made is determined by the successful candidate’s level of experience and professional accomplishment. Minimum qualifications for those ranks are:

Senior Assistant Librarian (salary grade 10): at least two years of professional experience after receiving the MLS; evidence of scholarly ability (e.g., additional coursework, conference presentations, publications) and professional or community service (e.g., active participation in professional society activities, involvement in committee or other service work at previous employers or community organizations) appropriate for an early-career librarian.

Associate Librarian (salary grade 11): at least five years professional experience after receiving the MLS; evidence of scholarly ability (e.g., additional coursework or advanced degrees, conference presentations, publications) and professional or community service (e.g., active participation in professional society activities, involvement in committee or other service work at previous employers or community organizations) appropriate for a mid-career librarian.

Librarian (salary grade 12): at least seven years professional experience after receiving the MLS; evidence of scholarly ability (e.g., additional coursework or advanced degrees, conference presentations, publications) and professional or community service (e.g., active participation in professional society activities, involvement in committee or other service work at previous employers or community organizations) appropriate for a senior librarian.
