Position Summary 

The Library Aide supports the daily operations and instruction of the school library by assisting students and staff, maintaining library materials, and supporting a welcoming and organized learning environment. This position reports to the Principal and receives guidance from Library Media Specialists, including the Lead Library Media Specialist. 


Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

Daily Operations 

  • Provide instruction in information literacy, research skills, digital citizenship, and responsible technology use. 
  • Assist students and staff with locating library materials and using library resources. 
  • Check materials in and out using the library management system. 
  • Recommend library media resources aligned with curriculum and student needs. 
  • Shelve, organize, and inventory library materials according to established procedures. 
  • Process new materials, including labeling, covering, and catalog support as directed. 
  • Maintain an orderly, safe, and welcoming library environment. 
  • Supervise students in the library to ensure appropriate behavior and use of resources. 
  • Assist with circulation reports, overdue notices, and basic recordkeeping. 
  • Support classroom teachers with library-related activities and scheduling as assigned. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in compliance with FERPA and District policy. 

Other Duties 

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Qualifications 

Education & Experience 

  • High School Diploma or GED required. 
  • Experience working in a library or school setting preferred. 

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • Basic knowledge of library organization and procedures or willingness to learn. 
  • Ability to use computers, library software, and basic office equipment. 
  • Strong organizational and attention-to-detail skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively with students and staff. 
  • Ability to maintain a calm, quiet, and supportive environment. 

 

Physical & Environmental Requirements 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods. 
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive motions. 
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment 

  • School library or media center setting. 
  • Regular interaction with students and staff. 
  • Generally quiet environment with periods of increased activity during class visits.
